A permanent option to replace lost or thinning eyebrow hair is an eyebrow hair transplant. This surgical procedure is intended to permanently restore and/or customize the appearance of the eyebrows. The procedure, known as follicular unit transplantation, involves removing donor hair follicles from one part of your body, typically the sides and back of your head, and transplanting the follicles into your eyebrows where they continue to grow for your lifetime.

Why Eyebrow Hair Loss Occurs

Eyebrow loss, also known as superciliary madarosis, can be caused by numerous issues. Genetics, thyroid conditions, stress, menopause, trauma from surgery, burns, and poor nutrition are just a few of the medical reasons for eyebrow hair loss. Age, over-plucking your eyebrows, prior electrolysis, overuse of eyebrow make-up, and even rubbing your eyebrows out of habit can cause eyebrow thinning and hair loss. Eyebrows are significant to human communication and facial expression. They also prevent sweat, water, and any other debris from falling into the eye socket. Therefore, they are actually needed. If you are experiencing thinning of the eyebrows or loss of your eyebrows, Dr. Sajan may be able to help you with eyebrow hair transplantation.

Eyebrow Hair Transplant Procedure

Dr. Sajan uses either Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) or Follicular Unit Transplant (FUT). An FUE procedure involves removing individual hair follicle units. The units are harvested from the scalp or another area as determined by Dr. Sajan. An FUT procedure involves removing a narrow strip of genetically intact follicular units from the donor area. Individual follicle units are removed from the strip and transplanted.

Dr. Sajan will explain his exact eyebrow hair transplant procedure; but, typically, the hairs are transplanted one and occasionally two at a time, the natural way the eyebrow hairs grow. This procedure is very delicate and requires perfect placement of the hairs into tiny, angled incisions at just the right direction and positioned to mimic your natural eyebrow hair growth. An eyebrow hair transplant procedure typically involves the placement of 50 to as many as 325 hairs per eyebrow. This depends on the existing amount of hair and the desired size and density of the eyebrows.

Usually performed under a mild sedative, the procedure takes anywhere from two-to-six hours and is essentially painless, as is the recovery period. During the first two-to-four days after the procedure, tiny crusts form around each transplanted hair. After three to five days, other than some occasional mild pinkness that will fade out by the first week, patients are able to return to normal activities without any noticeable sign of having an eyebrow hair transplant. Sutures that are placed in the donor area are usually removed after one week. The transplanted hairs will shed around three-to-five weeks after the procedure and then start to regrow at about two months post-surgery. Final results can be expected around 10 months post-procedure with full growth and coverage clearly visible.

Pros and Cons of a Eyebrow Hair Transplant

The best pro of an eyebrow hair transplant is that you have your eyebrows back. Your eyebrow density will improve which will enhance your facial appearance. This can be a tremendous boost to your self-esteem. Secondly, the transplanted hair is permanent. It will continue to grow for the rest of your life. The cons of an eyebrow hair transplant are very minimal. The redness and swelling after the procedure is a con that is to be expected with virtually any surgical procedure. In very few cases, the eyebrows may grow in the opposite direction but this can be remedied by training the hair to grow the same way as the surrounding hairs.
