Dysphoria is a condition that transgender individuals spend years struggling with. Patients who are struggling with dysphoria take various steps to modify their appearance in a way that is in line with the way they feel. Top surgery is one of the most important components of any transition protocol.
When performed by an experienced surgeon, top surgery enables FTM patients to achieve a firm, masculine look in the chest area, giving them a massive boost in confidence and a wider selection in their wardrobes. In addition, it enables them to feel more confident and authentic when going out into the world.
What is FTM top surgery?
Top surgery involves incredibly innovative techniques that achieve the patient’s desired outcome without causing much scarring. The procedure can be performed by way of one of two incision methods:
The periareolar incision – The periareolar incision, otherwise known as a keyhole incision, encircles the nipple. A secondary incision is then made around the same area at a wider circumference. This technique is recommended for patients who only need a small amount of breast tissue extracted.
The double incision – The double incision method is typically used in cases where the patient has a lot of breast tissue that needs to be removed. With this technique, two horizontal incisions are made at both the top and bottom ends of the pectoral muscles. The surgeon then lifts the skin to remove fat and tissue from the area. Liposuction is sometimes performed simultaneously for more pronounced results.
What are the benefits of top surgery?
A major boost in self confidence
FTM trans men who undergo top surgery experience a higher level of confidence. They feel better in their own skin.
Improved expression of one’s gender
It goes without saying that patients who undergo FTM top surgery feel a greater congruence between the way they look and the way they feel. As a result, patients feel that they can express themselves as they want with less psychological hindrance.
A better outlook on life
Transgender individuals who are struggling with dysphoria are more prone to depression and anxiety. These factors are what make the group the most susceptible to suicidal ideology. Top surgery helps trans men feel better about themselves and the way they connect with the world.
More clothing options
Patients who undergo top surgery find that they now have a wider array of clothing options. One of the most exciting parts of one’s transitioning journey is to go shopping and get all of the clothes they’ve always wanted to wear.
Who is an ideal candidate for FTM top surgery?
As with any surgical treatment, patients should be in good physical and mental health and free of any conditions that could cause issues during the surgery. All gender-affirming surgeries require patients to provide documentation confirming that they have had persistent gender dysphoria for several years. FTM top surgery is no different, and patients need to be psychologically ready for the massive change that comes with it. Patients must be at least 18 years of age in order to give full consent for the procedure. Younger patients will have to be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
Additionally, patients must provide a letter from a licensed therapist that states that the patient has been undergoing counseling related to gender dysphoria, that they are certain they want to live their life as another gender, and that they are free of any mental health problems that could interfere with this diagnosis.
What does the recovery process entail?
Top surgery is usually carried out in a span of two to three hours on an outpatient basis. After the procedure, patients are instructed to wear a compression garment that reduces swelling and ensures that their new chest contours are protected. If needed, the patient will be fitted with drains that remove excess fluid and blood from the treatment sites.
Patients are also prescribed certain medications that will keep them comfortable throughout the recovery process. Side effects such as swelling, bruising, and tenderness are normal and to be expected. They usually fade away about two weeks after the surgery. Most patients are able to get back to their normal routines in about three weeks.
