What is chin reduction?
Chin reduction, also known as a mentoplasty or genioplasty, is a surgical procedure that addresses the beauty and balance of the face by carefully reducing and reshaping part of the bone tissue that makes up the chin. This procedure enhances the appearance of the lower jawline, the neck and the area around the chin, thus minimizing the projection of an overly-prominent chin. The aim of the procedure is to enhance the patient's facial appearance and, thus, help them raise their self-esteem and confidence.
How does chin reduction work?
Chin reduction surgery is a safe and straightforward procedure that involves placing an incision either within the mouth or beneath the chin, to allow access to the chin bone. During surgery, a pre assessed amount of bone tissue is removed to reduce the chin’s height, width, or both as necessary, and the tip of the chin is then reset in place in a now less prominent and more complementary manner.
What are the benefits of chin reduction?
- Creates an equal balance and nice proportion between the nose and chin, thus bringing balance between them
- Can be performed in conjunction with other facial procedures like facelift and rhinoplasty for elegant appearances
- Patients are capable of defining their desired chin adjustment goals easily
- It is a permanent procedure
Am I a candidate for chin reduction?
Candidates for chin reduction surgery include patient who:
- Have a large or protruding chin that they feel is too long or too wide
- Are in good physical and mental health
- Are unhappy with the appearance of their chin profile
- Have realistic expectations regarding the results of the surgery
- Are at least 20 years old
How should I prepare for chin reduction surgery?
Patients will be personally advised on how to prepare in their private consultation before surgery. As a rough guide, however, one would avoid blood thinning medications including Aspirin, cease smoking for several weeks before and after surgery, and eliminate alcohol consumption for 3-4 days.
What is recovery like from chin reduction surgery?
Following surgery, patients will experience mild to moderate inflammation, bruising and tightness around the chin. Pain can be managed by pain medication and ice packs will help reduce inflammation. As we want to limit stress and pressure as much as possible, the diet will begin with liquids and progress to soups and soft foods for 3-4 days, returning to a regular diet on about the fifth day after surgery.
